Microsoft Surface Go Review: Windows in a Tablet

The Surface Go runs real Windows — not a mobile OS. That’s its superpower, and its tradeoff.

The Surface Go is a full Windows PC in tablet form. That means real desktop apps — full Microsoft Office, desktop browsers, and legacy software — not the stripped-down mobile versions. If you need actual Windows on the go, nothing else in this size does it.

Full Windows, real apps

The killer feature is the OS. Install anything a Windows laptop can run. Pair the Type Cover and it becomes a genuinely usable mini-laptop for writing, email, and light office work.

The tradeoffs

Performance is the catch — the entry model is modest, so heavy multitasking and demanding apps will feel slow. Battery life is also shorter than an iPad. You’re trading polish for desktop compatibility.

Who it’s for

The Surface Go is for Windows people who want a light second device — students who need Office, professionals who need a specific Windows app, and travelers who want a real PC that fits in a bag.

Verdict

Pros

  • Full Windows 11
  • Real desktop apps
  • Compact and light
  • Great with Type Cover

Cons

  • Modest performance
  • Shorter battery
  • Accessories sold separately
  • Windows on a tablet is less touch-friendly

If you need Windows on the go, the Surface Go is the pick. Otherwise, an iPad or Galaxy Tab is more polished for casual use.
