No Room to Grow Food? Start a Container Garden

A concrete backyard, a balcony, or just a sunny windowsill is enough to grow real food. Here’s how to start without a yard.

The space excuse

Most people think they need a garden plot to grow anything. They don’t. Tomatoes, herbs, peppers, and greens all thrive in containers — and a container garden is easier to control than a raised bed.

Start with the right container

Pick pots with drainage and go bigger than you think — more soil means more consistent moisture and less daily watering. Fabric grow bags are cheap, breathe well, and store flat in winter.

Light is the real limit

Most food plants want 6+ hours of sun. If your only spot is shady or indoors, a grow light turns any shelf into a growing station. It’s the one purchase that makes an apartment garden actually work.

Soil & water

Use potting mix (not garden dirt) and feed lightly. Self-watering containers or a simple drip timer remove the #1 reason container gardens fail: forgetting to water.
