Bambu Lab H3C Review: The Tool Changer That Fixes Multicolor Printing

The H3C is Bambu Lab’s first third-generation printer — nine toolheads that swap in about six seconds. It takes the worst part of multicolor printing and makes it disappear.

The H3C is a tool changer, not a single-nozzle printer. That one decision changes everything about how multicolor and multi-material prints work. Instead of purging and swapping filament through one hotend, it physically swaps between nine pre-heated toolheads — each with its own filament path.

Swaptek: nine heads, six-second swaps

The headline feature is the Swaptek system: nine toolheads that swap in about six seconds. Because each head keeps its own filament loaded, there’s almost no purge waste between colors — the tower of discarded plastic that single-nozzle multicolor printers produce is essentially gone.

For anyone who’s watched a multicolor print waste more filament than the part itself weighs, this is the single biggest upgrade you can buy.

Multicolor & multi-material, finally practical

The H3C prints up to 9 colors out of the box, and up to 24 with extra AMS units. More importantly, it handles genuinely different materials — including 2.85mm TPU, which flexible-filament printers normally struggle with. You can combine rigid and flexible parts in one print, something single-nozzle machines can’t do cleanly.

It’s also a genuine dual-color machine, so two-tone parts are a first-class feature, not a workaround.

AMS 3H: dries while it prints

The new AMS 3H stores up to nine filaments, each on its own dedicated path, and actively dries two spools while the printer runs. Wet filament is the #1 cause of stringy, brittle prints — having drying built in removes a whole category of failed prints.

Two of the nine slots dry; the tradeoff is that it doesn’t auto-rewind filament, so spool swaps are manual. A minor annoyance for a lot of capability.

Speed, build quality & extras

At 1,400mm/s top speed with 40mm³/s flow, it’s fast even by 2026 standards. A 350°C max nozzle and 120°C bed open the door to engineering materials. Two 1080p cameras let you watch prints remotely, and HEPA/carbon filtration keeps fumes in check.

It’s heavy — 80 pounds with the AMS — and nearly 50 inches tall with the lid open, so plan your bench space.

Who it’s for

The H3C is for serious makers, small print-farm operators, and anyone who does a lot of multicolor or multi-material work. It’s overkill if you mostly print single-color PLA, but if multicolor was the thing stopping you, this removes the excuse.

Verdict

Pros

  • 9 toolheads swap in ~6 seconds
  • Far less purge waste on multicolor
  • Dries two spools while printing
  • 2.85mm TPU + multi-material out of the box
  • HEPA filtration + dual 1080p cameras

Cons

  • $2,499 — expensive for occasional use
  • No automatic filament rewinding
  • Only two of nine slots dry
  • Nearly 50″ tall with the lid open

The H3C is the first printer that makes multicolor genuinely practical, not just possible. If you print in color or multiple materials, it earns its price. If you don’t, buy something cheaper.
